How many hot dogs do you think you could eat in 10 minutes? 5? 10? How about 64? That's how many Joey Chestnut ate to defend his title at the 92nd Annual Nathan's Hot Dog eating contest in Coney Island, NY. 64. Man, that's a lot of hot dogs. But the win didn't come easy. This was the first time in history a tiebreaker determined the winner. Chestnut and six time champion Takeru "Tsunami" Kobayashi both ate 59 in 10 minutes. So, whoever ate 5 the fastest was named the winner. So Chestnut gets to keep his title for another year. Here's a fun fact: Because Kobayashi can't get Nathan's hot dogs in Japan, he has them flown in so he can practice.
Edamame. Pescatarian. Prosecco. These are just a few of 100 words added to the Merriam-Webster dictionary. Have any idea what they mean? A few of them you may recognize, like edamame (if you eat sushi) or dirty bomb (if you follow current events). The wordsmiths at Merriam-Webster monitor the use of these words for years and then decide which to add. Several of the new entries reflect the nation's growing interest in the culinary art, new technology or products and current events and much-discussed news topics. A fun one is "mondegreen". It describes words mistaken for other words. It most often comes from misunderstood phrases or lyrics. Here's a few examples: "There's a bathroom on the right" often mistaken for Creedence Clearwater Revival's "There's a bad moon on the rise" and "Scuse me, while I kiss this guy" in place of "kiss the sky" in Jimi Hendrix classic "Purple Haze." There has to be TONS of mondegreens out there. This was a mistake a friend made, I swear! "Don't go Jason Wonderful" instead of "Don't go chasing waterfalls" by TLC. I want to hear yours! Post them at the top of the page. Here's a link to the story I found if you'd like to brush up on your vocabulary.
