On any school day it would have been difficult for kids to wake up before 5 AM, but on May 29, kids from all over East Tennessee were too excited about a trip to want to stay in bed any longer. Over 1200 students arrived at Knoxville Center Mall to load buses and head to Washington DC. It's their big reward for being part of the Safety Patrol at their schools. We were live that morning for their send off. The day after they returned home, we got an email from a 4th grader at Glenwood Elementary School in Oak Ridge telling us all about their trip. Here's what she had to say:

Dear Allison,

Hi, my name is Alex and I'm a fourth grader at Glenwood Elementary School in Oak Ridge.  I went on the Safety Patrol trip this weekend and you interviewed me with my friends before we got on the bus.  I wanted to tell you how much fun I had on the trip.  My favorite things were the Capitol, The White House, The Lincoln Memorial, the Vietnam War Memorial, The Washington Memorial and the zoo.

At the gift shop at the zoo the line was very long.  It took about twenty minutes to get to the cash register.

Now about the Capitol.  All of the Safety Patrol kids got to meet Congressman Duncan.  He spoke for a little while and we had to have our hats off to show respect.

Now about The White House.  Some of my friends stuck their hands through the fence and said they got "Presidential grass," but they can't prove that.

Now about the Vietnam War Memorial.  Some of my teachers were crying because they had lost some people in the Vietnam War.  Ms. Ridenour had lost a person in her family named James L. Cherry.  She got to trace James L. Cherry's name off the wall to keep.  After that we went to the Lincoln Memorial and Glenwood got to take pictures in front of the statue of Abraham Lincoln and got a picture in front of the sayings he wrote.

Now about the Washington Memorial.  We really didn't get to go up close because it was too far away and we wanted to go see The Lincoln Memorial before the day was over.

When we went to go see The Lincoln Memorial, The Washington Memorial and The Vietnam War Wall it was the last day to be in D.C..

The last night we were at the hotel it was the best dinner ever.  It was the best dinner we had because they had rolls and chicken and mashed potatoes and they had cake with ice cream and soda!  When my friends and I got to the room we had a humongous party.  We stayed up until 1:30 in the morning then woke up at 5:45.

If you are going to interview kids about their trip I would love to be one of them!  Hope you email me back!!

Thanks,

Alex

Is that not the sweetest thing? We look forward to hearing more stories! See you in the morning,

Allison

The AAA Safety Patrol Trip was great! We're already working on next year's trip. A big THANK YOU to all the chaperones, officers, medical personnel, and especially the Safeties!
