I'm not a big fan of cliches, but sometimes the right one can really grasp a situation. Such is the case involving sportscaster Jim Gray. Jim. There really is a time and place for everything. Wednesday (August 11) wasn't the time and a Ryder Cup news conference wasn't the place. U.S. Ryder Cup team captain Cory Pavin said Gray had misquoted him. Gray reported Pavin planned to invite Tiger Woods to join the Ryder Cup team, Pavin claims he said no such thing. Following a news conference, Gray verbally challenged Pavin, supposedly calling him a liar repeatedly, pointing a finger at him, and telling him he was "going down." Really? That's how a professional broadcaster chose to handle the conflict? Thing is, Gray has a history of these types of "attention getting" moments. Remember who hosted "The Decision," that debacle of an ESPN "special" that revealed where Lebron James was going to play basketball? Yep, Jim Gray was sitting on the stool opposite King James. How about Gray's grilling of Pete Rose following Rose's standing ovation introduction before the 1999 MLB All-Star game? Yep, Jim was holding the microphone there too, asking gambling question after gambling question. Time and place Jim, time and place. Even if a broadcaster becomes a key part of a story once, it's one time too many. Jim Gray clearly has a pattern of such events, the most recent one could very well be the final straw for his employer. Perhaps it should be.
