Elementary School Moments and Memories

Hey Friends,

Nostalgia ... I believe it's such an important part of life.

I believe that remembering back to the good times in your past is one of the most peaceful things we can do for ourselves.  I try to reflect back as much as I can.  It make my heart smile. This week I'm thankful I get to do this and work at the same time.

I went to elementary school at East LaFollette Elementary.  Next week will mark a big move for Campbell County as the two LaFollette elementary schools (East and West) merge into ONE elementary school  East and West were fierce rivals when I grew up .. yes even at at elementary school age .. so this is a big deal!

Jim Freeman (WVLT Meteorologist and Reporter), also of LaFollette, attended West LaFollette elementary school and this week we are going to do a special report together on the schools and our experience there.  We are going to get to go in and walk the halls of our elementary schools in the final days the doors are open and get a "sneak peak" of the new LaFollette Elementary School opening up next week.

I can't wait ... I'm interviewing my 3rd grade teacher Mrs. Leach and a hopefully a friend from back in the day.  I look forward to hearing about Jim's memories at West as well!

Speaking of elementary school ... I got to go to Seymour Primary on Friday and read two books to Mrs. Dykes first grade class!  They had a reading rodeo day and everyone dressed in their finest western attire.  I was jealous .. I wanted to have on my cowboy boots soooo bad .. but had to leave straight off the set of the morning news, so I couldn't!  However the school was nice enough to give me a red bandanna and one of the students even let me borrow a cowboy while I read!

Thanks everyone!  You were such good listeners!!

Have a great week!  Make sure and tune in later this week to see the special report on East vs West .. it will be fun!!

Stacy :)

Thank you for recognizing the importance that schools play in a community and in children's lives. As an East LaFollette teacher it "does my heart good" to see our former students follow their dreams and become successful. It is a pleasure to have such splendid role models such as you and J.Freeman. Keep up the good work. (It was lovely to see you again.)

I went to East La Follette back some time ago(1963& 1964)and still have some cool memories.Shooting marbles in the playground, getting my fist kiss from a girl and catching brown snakes and turning them loose in the hall and watch the girls scream, ah those were the days. Also mu friend got glasses so I lied to my parents and told them my vision was blurry so I could get glasses too, boy I guess I was a mean little kid, but I'm proud of my raising growing up in L A

Your finding time to include the fact that East and West LaFollette Elem. is closing and will become one in 2008 reflects the change in one community. Our political front runners speak of the need for and the effects of change in America, yet if not for you so many like myself that attended East LaFollette would not have been given the chance this morning to reflect on wonderful people, at a wonderful place in time that lead, guided and directed the future leaders of this great nation up and down the halls, and on and off the playgrounds of schools just like these found in rural America. I am so very proud to have memories of growing up in LaFollette in the 50's, 60's and 70's. I am even more proud that when I begin my day with the early morning news.....I have a wonderful newscaster named Stacy McCloud to watch and listen as she not only presents the days news but reminds me of exactly why I am proud to have grown up where I did because she also represents all the good of my hometown.

You simply must post the picture. Everyone would love it. If I remember correctly it was a ruffle-y shirt, right? The things we wore...now that would make a funny blog topic!

Were you also voted Miss LaFollette Middle School? I was younger, but I remember seeing a picture of the cutest blond standing by a tree that was crowned with Michael Leach as Mr. LMS. Was that you?
