BLOUNT CO., Tenn. (WVLT) -- It can be hard to keep up with crime. Sometimes you may not even know something happened just down the street.

Now, the next generation of accessing crime reports is in East Tennessee.

The Blount County Sheriff's Department now allows you to have all the information at your finger tips through an interactive map.

They partnered with CrimeReports.com to let you track crime where you live.

The site shows a burglary in the 800 block of Wells Road. Vickie Helton lives on that street, and had no idea it happened on September 7th.

She says they know all the neighbors around them, and they all keep an eye on each others' houses.

"My neighbors, I've talked to them, but they haven't said anything about it so I don't know where the burglary actually happened," she said.

That's where the new online map comes in.

At the end of each shift the information is updated. That means when you get home from work and when you wake up in the morning, you can log on and get the latest crime reports.

Sergeant Jeff Hicks, with the Blount County Sheriff's Department said the site can be a resource, to turn watchful neighbors, like Vickie, into an extra set of eyes for cops.

"They might have saw something in their neighborhood and didn't' realize they saw a pick-up truck backed to a house," he said.

Vickie pointed, out on her dead-end street, "I could have thought it was somebody turning around and it might have actually been somebody doing something."

Sgt. Hicks said, "We have become a society that wants instant information," and that's what they want to give their community.

Since it's county wide, you can focus on any area you choose, like your child's school or your church.

The site allows you to narrow down reports from as little as 3 days out, to as much as 30 days.

You can also just look at particular types of crime, like property thefts. The site also pulls in the state's sex offender registry to map it all on one site for you.

"You don't know who to trust and who not to," said Vickie.

So for her, the site is a reassurance. A way for her to stay in the loop, even after working all day.

Sgt. Hicks hopes neighborhoods and communities will join the website, because in the future the BCSO plans to message you, and let you know of crime in your area.

Knox and Anderson Counties also post their crime reports online.
