The Knoxville Police Department has started an investigation after a police K-9 was shot by animal control officers after escaping its handler in Campbell County and biting a woman.

CAMPBELL COUNTY, Tenn. (WVLT)--The Knoxville Police Department has started an investigation after a police K-9 was shot by animal control officers after escaping its handler in Campbell County and biting a woman.

The dog escaped when its kennel overturned during a severe thunderstorm. It ran to a neighbor's home, where it bit a woman. Campbell County Animal Control officers fatally shot the animal.

The woman was taken to a nearby hospital, where she was treated and released.
