Knoxville (WVLT) -- This year the recall list may be just as important as your shopping list.
That’s why many stores are trying to keep on their toes when it comes to product safety.
We talked to some experts about how you can double check to know what you are buying is safe.
“I think it was mainly the items we had on sale today
Whether it's a huge discount on a flat screen TV or simply beating the Black Friday rush, stores like the K-Mart on Kingston Pike were reeling them in this Thanksgiving.
Even by dawn on Thursday, the deals were gone, stores were quickly selling out.
“I just go and do what I need to do at the last minute,” said Becky Stepp who was at the stores just to browse.
But when the browsing turns to buying for her grand babies, one list Becky won't rush us the recalls.
“I am worried because when you look at most things, a lot of it is made in China,” she said.
“For a couple of weeks ago, we had three or four times a week that there was stuff that we were having to pull,” said Jennifer Pruitt from the K-Mart.
On Thanksgiving week alone, 15 products made the Consumer Product Safety list of voluntary recalls including pacifiers with a choking risk, pillow slipcovers for choking and lead paint, bracelets sold through schools for lead paint and kids pencil pouches, also for lead paint.
“The vast majority of toys, really the manufacturers, have not had a chance to get in and change anything,” said Ed Schmults from FAO Schwartz Toys. “What they've been doing is testing vigorously.”
In fact, Kmart, Wal-Mart and Sears tell us they're putting more effort into testing to make sure what's already in there stores won't wind up on the recall list.
“We pull it immediately and email corporate that we have pulled it,” said Pruitt. “We hold it in a secure area until they give us directions on what to do with it.”
What more can you do?
A California State senator is sending you straight to the Consumer Product Safety site, on the World Wide Web.
“The nice thing about this site is you get on-going emails as you go,” said Sen. Dean Florez, from Fresno, California.
Becky believes her daughter is already on it, as are a lot of parents, all to make sure that toys brings nothing but Christmas joy.
