With the start of another school year on the horizon, families will soon hit retailers for back-to-school necessities.

Given the current economy, families who don't plan carefully may be forced to choose between covering their child's educational needs and paying household bills.

Consumer Credit Counseling Service offers these tips to help take the sting out of back-to-school shopping:

Take advantage of Tennessee sales tax holidays. For the third year in a row, parents will not pay sales tax on back-to-school items purchased between Aug. 1 and Aug. 3.

Take inventory. Begin with a list of all needs, next take a look around the house for items that you already own. Last year's backpack and supplies may be just what is needed to start the new school year.

Don't buy new. Buying books for college can cost as much as tuition. Used text books can save students as much as 50 percent.

Comparison shop. Pay particular attention to sales expiration dates. If an item is not already on the shopping list of necessities, don't buy it, even if it is a great deal.

Use credit wisely. If using credit is absolutely necessary, limit purchases to items that can be paid off in 90 days or less. Remember that using a credit card is like taking out a short-term loan.

Start thinking about next year. Keep a list of necessary items to purchase, and watch sales throughout the year. Set aside a little money each month that is designated for back-to-school shopping.
