MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) -- Tipton County computer consultant and Navy veteran Donn Janes has announced he is running as a Republican for the congressional seat held by U.S. Rep. John Tanner, a Democrat.
Janes told the Commercial Appeal that he is concerned about the financial shape of the country and wants to run for the seat during next year's race.
Tanner is serving his 11th term in Congress from the 8th district, which is in West Tennessee. He is the chairman of the Ways and Means subcommittee on Social Security.
He was a founder of the Blue Dog Democratic coalition of fiscal conservatives and is the current president of the NATO Parliamentary Assembly.
Tanner has consistently been re-elected with more than 60 percent of the vote since 1988 and faced no opposition in 2008.
