KNOXVILLE (WVLT) – KNOXVILLE (WVLT) – Gospel music legend Dottie Rambo, 74 was killed early Sunday morning when her tour bus ran off the road in southwest Missouri and struck an embankment.

Rambo played a show Saturday evening in Granite City, Illinois, and was headed to play a Sunday night show in North Richland Hills, Texas when the wreck occurred a couple miles east of Mount Vernon on I-44.

Representatives from her recording label confirmed to WVLT that the Kentucky native was asleep at the time of the accident, and her manager Larry Ferguson was on the bus along with his wife and two children.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol said a total of seven people were on the bus and injured in the accident. They were all hospitalized in Springfield with injuries ranging from moderate to severe.

Dottie Rambo was regarded as a legend throughout the musical community. She was born in the western Kentucky coal mining town of Madisonville and began singing when she was 12 years old.

She has published more than 2,500 songs, including “We Shall Behold Him,” “Holy Spirit Though Art Welcome (In the Place),” and “I Go to the Rock.”

She was awarded the 1968 Grammy for Best Soul Gospel Performance for “The Soul of Me.”

In 2006, Former Kentucky Governor Ernie Fletcher approved Rambo’s induction into the Kentucky Music Hall of Fame, and she was made a member of the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2007.

Upon learning of her death, Dolly Parton issued a release calling Dottie, “a dear friend, fellow singer, songwriter and entertainer, and lately duet singing partner.”

Doug Hutchison, who is the son of current Mulls Singing Convention host Charlotte Mull Hutchison and grandson of Rev. J. Bazzel Mull said Dottie devoted herself to music and the lord.

“She was in Illinois last night and headed to Texas for another concert today,” he said. “It's hard to be sad for Dottie, because we know where she is.”

So sorry to hear of the accident that took Dottie's life, I have enjoyed her life and music. It is our loss and her gain. She is now beholding the Lord she wrote and sang about. I am praying for her family for I know of the great loss they still feel.

A warrior walked through the pearly gates, striking up the band, and her audience in Heaven awaits. You have done wonderful here, but as you behold Him, sweeter lyrics awaits. You are loved and deeply appreciated over the years Dottie. Family, we are praying for you; thank you for sharing your gift of love with the world.

Dottie was a real trooper who praised God in the midst of her pain. She lived a life before the world opening displaying her love for Jesus. She was rewarded for her faithfulness - through tremendous pain she was given songs by God that touched the hearts of all people who heard them. Farewell, Dottie. All of us love you.

How sad for the person who ask 'Who is Dottie Rambo'. Obviously, they were never blessed by "We shall behold Him", "Mommas teaching angels how to sing" and 2500 other heart felt songs that she penned. Now she can sing them to the MASTER in person. Glory be to her GOD!

I have always loved Dottie Rambo, and We Shall Behold Him is one of my all-time favorite songs of praise. She was a gifted songwriter, a talented singer and a devoted servant of her Lord Jesus Christ. When you hear the words to We Shall Behold Him, you realize that what Dottie once believed by faith she now knows by sight. For she has now beheld Him, her Savior and Lord.

I loved Dottie. She had a wonderful voice and her dedication to God was an inspiration. She was one of my favorite singers. What a loss for us and what a gain to heaven.

She will be so sadly missed. I used to sing her songs when I was singing and really loved them. Such a terrible loss for such a great lady. I just saw the TBN special last night that honored her and was given the award of the century. I just could not believe when it was flashed across the bottom of the screen that she was gone to be with the Lord. Like she said on the show, she will have a new body. Being an amputee with severe hip and spine trouble, I can't wait.... I'll have a new body too. Was so happy to see her on the Gaithers Homecoming cause I was hopeing for the com9e back. Such a beautifully and such loved lady. I will miss her and her music. I will still keep singing her songs when I can.... See You Later Ms Rambo or just, Bye for now..

I agree Dottie's death is a loss for us, but it's a VICTORY for her. I envy her being at home with our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ! I wish I were there. I enjoy life, but really look forward to the day when I see and can THANK our Savior face to face! Come Quickly Lord Jesus!!

Dottie had so many sad trails during her life. She was a great woman of God, just a great witness thru all she has gone thru. Her family are in our prayers.

dear friend is spelled "dear" not "deer" A "deer" is a furry animal. Dolly Parton is referring to a "dear" friend.

Beautiful and confident lady of God. The Rambo's were a joy to listen to and watch as they sang together as a family. I watched them since i was going to the same org. Daughter Reba (Rambo)& Donny McGuire and Family will need extra strength as will Buck Rambo. God bless you all as you work for the Lord. It is the only thing that will last, everything else will just fade away. What is done for God will stand! Sharon Kcatonline

I just learned of our horrible loss (Dottie's fans and fellow Christians). Our earthly Angel has been taken from us...what will we do without her. Thank you Lord for giving us our Dottie for a while, even though it was a short while, her beautiful compositions will go with on - her legacy. When this was announced I felt numb. Just last week I began to collect her music starting with 3 cds and a dvd. I know these compilations will remain on the market but the precious angel who wrote them is gone from this earth. Sorry if I seem to ramble but it's just such a horrible shock. Along with thousands of others, I loved her, her gift of song and her love for others. THANK YOU LORD FOR SHARING HER WITH US. SINCERLY............

To hear of Dottie's death makes me sad for her many loved ones but as for her I feel like she's where she has spent her life preparing to be, at home with her savior. Praise the Lord for what she's left behind.

Dottie was a woman of God, one whose songs have blessed millions. As former organist at PTL Television Network, my life has been touched by her music and her testimony. We will miss her but know that the music God gave her will live on....and on. Thank you Dottie for your devotion to our Lord and his work. My prayers are with you Reba and family.

As a songwriter I would like to do my best as a writer to praise God with all of my might by writing the best songs I can to the glory of God no matter what happens in life as Dottie Rambo did through her life. Thank God for receiving her into His hands.
