Some would-be teen age Steven Spielberg’s from Knoxville's Austin East High School won the “A-Parent Miscommunication,” a PSA contest sponsored by the Metropolitan Drug Commission.

The Metropolitan Drug Commission partnered with the Tennessee Commission on Children and Youth to offer students and the community-at-large a chance to create and star in “A-Parent Miscommunication,” a PSA contest targeting underage drinking.

Knox County high school students in grades 9-12 or members of the community produced a 15 or 30 second public service announcement (PSA) aimed at parents. The video advertisement addressed the following messages:

By its charter the Metropolitan Drug Commission is a private, non-profit corporation formed by a joint resolution of the City of Knoxville and Knox County. The mission of the Metropolitan Drug Commission is to mobilize all segments of our community to individually reject and, as a community, reduce youth use and adult abuse of alcohol and other drugs.

Would you like to become a community leader in youth substance abuse prevention?

Join the Drug-Free Community Coalition! Individuals representing parent organizations, youth service providers, law enforcement, recovery and treatment programs, the school system and privately-owned businesses work together to improve access to treatment and reduce substance abuse, especially among youth, in our community by:

  • Recruiting volunteers to work with students at Knox County's Alternative School
  • Supporting positive youth activities such as the Knoxville Youth Summit and YATI after-school programs
  • Organizing community workshops and training about commonly abused substances
  • Reaching out to faith organizations and local churches to expand the network of support for those recovering from addiction

The coalition meets from 12-1 p.m. on the 4th Tuesday every other month. Locations vary from month to month. Participation can increase knowledge of substance abuse and the tough issues our young people are facing today. If you would like to join our efforts, call (865) 588-5550 or send an email to mdrugcom@bellsouth.net.

Underage drinking is illegal and dangerous, not a rite of passage.

Parents have a lawful responsibility to prohibit youth access to alcohol. (According to state law, adults who host parties where minors are present have a “duty of care,” meaning they can be held liable and in violation of the law if underage drinking occurs, even in cases where adults do not furnish the alcohol.)

Sixty-five percent of teens who drink say they get their alcohol from family and friends.

The Metropolitan Drug Commission is a non-profit organization established by a joint resolution of the City of Knoxville and Knox County to unite policy makers and leaders to address community substance abuse issues. It serves the community by educating; advocating for treatment and prevention services; and providing a forum in which members from all sectors of the community come together to address alcohol, tobacco and other drugs.
