ET&Co: Fix it Friday: Turn your deck into a covered porch
Font Size:

It is likely you have wanted to enjoy the summer Weather outdoors on your deck, but instead you find yourself sitting outside under the wide open Sky, baking in the sun, hot and miserable, wishing you had a roof over your head.

Now is the time to do something about it by turning your deck into a covered porch with Kenny Guffey Construction.

Turn your deck into a covered porch.

Just pick up the phone and call (865) 577-3514 and talk to Kenny Guffey, owner of Kenny Guffey Construction and make that covered porch happen!

Kenny says there are some things you should consider before constructing a roof over your existing deck.

First, investigate the structural components of the deck.

Are the floor joists big enough to carry the added weight of the roof and are they attached properly to the banding?

Are the footings large enough to carry the added weight load of both the existing deck plus the roof load?

There are also a couple different options for the roof system.

-Gable roof (meaning roof that looks like an a
Without the horizontal cross line)
-Flat roof (meaning what it says "flat")
-Shed roof (meaning roof that sheds from one side only)

Kenny says before adding the roof you should ask yourself a few questions.

-What are your plans for the covered porch in the future?
-Do you ever plan on making a finished room out of it?
If so, you may want to consider insulating between the ceiling rafters at the completion of the framing stage rather than tear
off the ceiling finishes and insulate at a later date.
-Is your existing deck large enough to accommodate things like outdoor furniture, tables and chairs?
If it is not large enough, then you might want to consider making it larger before the roof structure is started.

Kenny says he has been busy with various remodeling jobs.

"Lots of home owners are staying in their homes and upgrading, renovating and adding room additions, covering existing porches, and many other home improvements," said Kenny.
