You know some things in life just get better with age.
But, exterior wood trim does not fit this phrase and it certainly doesn't "age gracefully".
For many years the only option for exterior trim was wood.
But, over the past 15 to 20 years products have been introduced that have revolutionized the exterior trim details of homes, making the trim
detail look authentic with the ability to hold up against the harsh elements of mother nature for years to come.
In the past wood was the only option and it looked great for a while.
But, exposed exterior wood is affected by the elements, the sun, water, heat and humidity.
All cause either expansion or contraction which eventually results in
-Cracking of paint and wood fibers
-Moisture penetration below the to surface which leads to rot and decay
Bottom line, it costs less in the beginning but over time you end up shelling out the bucks to repair or replace it and to fix the extended damage.
Advantages of PVC composite trim are:
-Does not expand and contract at the same rate as wood
-Will not rot or decay
-Comes in almost any size and profile as that of wood trim
-Will hold paint better than wood
-Looks good for years with little maintenance
-Termite resistant
Disadvantage of PVC composite trim are:
-2 to 3 time more cost than wood trim
-Must special order some trim profiles
-Most only come in 16' lengths
Advantage of wood trim:
-Most styles are in stock
-Cost less than PVC composite
-Cuts and sands easily
-Paints well and look great…for a while.
Disadvantage of wood trim:
-Expands & contracts with weather elements
-Will rot and decay over time
-Cost less in the beginning but will cost more to repair and maintain
