KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WVLT) -- Recent recalls may have you questioning the safety of your family's food, but there is an easy way to help ensure what you are eating is safe.
Updates of food recalls may seem all too common, but some people say safe food, is as simple as knowing where it comes from.
For Elaine Reed, Market Square is her grocery store, and each tent, is the produce section.
Elaine said, "I think the vegetables and things are fresher, there's less chemicals."
For Elaine it is about knowing where her family's food has been. She said, "You get to pick exactly what you want, it's not prepackaged."
David Vandergriff, Knox County Agriculture Agent, said, "There's a lot of pros whenever you're buying locally grown produce."
Vandergriff says the small scale local farms, can be a large draw for customers. "They've got a lot more flexibility, quality control, and things are just safer all the way around," said Vandergriff.
He recommends you wash any produce you buy, like melon, even eggs. Because even though you don't eat the outside, that is where the bacteria is.
But, he says overall, food in the U.S. is safe.
David said, "It's usually isolated incidences but whenever its a really large scale producer, it affects a lot of people, it can affect a lot of states."
So for your family's health, David says you should keep up with recalls. "Be aware if there is a food recall, and respond to it quickly. If you hear that something is recalled and you have that product in your refrigerator or on the shelf, you need to check and make sure you don't have something that's from that batch."
Keeping up with food and safety recalls, may seem daunting but there are few simple steps you can take to stay informed.
Obviously, Volunteer TV will pass them along to you, or you can have recalls come to you.
Setting up a Google alert is a very easy way to have your email inbox, be your source for what you want to know about. Go to Google.com/alerts and type in food recall and preview the results. Then you can have the updated results come to you, as often as you would like.
