FRAMINGHAM, Mass. (AP) -- Genzyme Corp. has opened a new 180,000-square foot science center in Framingham where researchers will work on discovering new treatments for a range of ailments including Parkinson's disease, cancer and heart disease.

The Cambridge-based biotechnology company opened the facility Monday. It is expected to employ up to 350 people.

Researchers at the center will focus on medical areas including genetic, immune, kidney and cardiovascular diseases, endocrinology and neurological disorders.

The facility meets federal "green building" standards and uses an estimated 26 percent less energy and 40 percent less water than a comparable conventional building.
