KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WVLT) -- In these tough economic times, it's easy for all of us to let other concerns come before our health.

This can be an even bigger problem for women who often put the concerns of other family members before their own.

One upcoming event hopes to change that by putting health resources right at women's fingertips.

Since losing her job in March, Karen Kaiser has been trying to provide for her children.

"It's just what moms do."

But between being a single mother to five and looking for work and a place to live, her health has been pushed aside.

"Not that health isn't important, but having a place to lay your head at night kinda takes precedence," Kaiser says. "Being able to put a roof over your children's head. Being able to eat."

There are women like Kaiser across the Volunteer State.

In national health rankings, Tennessee can often be found at the bottom of the list.

"We're 49th? We don't need to be 49th," says All About Women CEO Sally Smallwood. "The state can do better for that."

Smallwood and others in Nashville decided doing better would take more than just talk.

So they organized All About Women, a daylong event to teach women about their health and prevention.

"It's just like your car," says Dr. Kathy Brown with the Knox County Health Department. "It will last longer, run better if you do some regular maintenance."

And even if you don't have health insurance, the resources are there.

Follow the doctor's orders and start small.

Dr. Brown says, "Start small. Do something. Look at something and identify something that's achievable and set yourself up for success."

That's what Kaiser hopes to do.

"Maybe that's something that I could work on," Kaiser says. "Because I want my children to be healthy as well."

To get help now with preventive care and other health concerns, women can reach out to Dr. Brown and the Knox County Health Department at 865-215-5000.

The All About Women event will be held next month at the Knoxville Convention Center.
