KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WVLT) - There are more than 84 types of sleep disorders, most of which can be diagnosed and treated with a sleep study.
Monday, we introduced you to Gail Wilson who decided to do a sleep study to figure out some of her issues related to drowsiness, weight and blood pressure.
Now, Gail gets her results. Find out how you too can get a better night sleep and a healthier life.
Gail Wilson is looking for answers. After 5 years of sleepless nights and sleepy days, she hopes to find some here at the Sleep Disorders Center at Ft. Sanders Regional Medical Center.
"I think I'm looking forward to what they find out to see if I do have some issues."
She's hooked to machines so technicians can monitor her eye movement, muscles and brainwave activity while she sleeps.
"It was nothing I'd ever really experienced before, being hooked up to all the monitors."
The staff looks for problems such as snoring, apnea or insomnia. Doctors say sleep disorders can affect your health, and could be life threatening.
"Overall quality of life, behavioral issues, memory loss, irritability, health issues such as high blood pressure, cardio vascular disease, and other health effects can result from poor quality sleep," says Dr. Thomas Higgins, with the Sleep Center.
The results show Gail actually slept well. Dr. Higgins says she gets enough rest, but requires more, causing her to feel drowsy during the day.
"It's amazing how it all adds up. I've always had to battle my weight and I have been diagnosed, I'm on blood pressure medication, so that I guess could be part of that issue."
She'll take medication to feel more awake during the day. A small task for a good night's sleep.
"I guess it just gives me a better understanding of why I feel the way I do. Gives me some answers and I guess gives me some hope that there's something that could make me feel better."
