Knoxville (WVLT) -- You might not know it, but the University of Tennessee’s campus is home to a memorial honoring a special set of veterans.
The War Dog Memorial near the Veterinary College represents hundreds of dogs that served in combat alongside U.S. Marines during World War II.
Most were Doberman Pinschers, but German Shepherds, Labrador Retrievers and Collies also served as guards, scouts, messengers and loyal companions.
The reverse side of the memorial lists the names of 25 canine combatants who lost their lives in the liberation of Guam in 1944.
Construction near the memorial currently makes it hard to get to, but you can click on the link below to virtually view it.
