Washington DC (WVLT) – The Karns Volunteer Fire Department has been given a federal grant worth nearly $60,000.

The money was awarded through the Department of Homeland Security under the 2007 Assistance to Firefighters Grant program, which helps local fire departments buy new equipment, organize health and fire safety programs and promote fire prevention.

“This grant will help the brave men and women in the Karns Volunteer Fire Department with the training and equipment they need in order to do their jobs and save lives,” said Sen. Lamar Alexander. “Senator Corker and I appreciate this investment from the Department of Homeland Security and will continue working together to ensure that fire departments in Tennessee are ready and able to keep our citizens safe.”

The Karns Volunteer Fire Department was formed in 1978 and serves four communities in Knox County.

They operate four fire stations located in Karns, Ball Camp, Hardin Valley and Solway.
