KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (AP) -- Tennessee transportation officials will reinspect five bridges with designs similar to one that collapsed in Minnesota, killing 13 people.
Federal officials said this week their analysis showed the plates that connected steel beams on the I-35-W bridge in Minneapolis were too small and were the critical factor in its failure in August.
TDOT spokeswoman Julie Oaks says bridges slated for inspection include the Interstate 40 bridge in Jefferson County over the French Broad River, the Gay Street Bridge in Knox County over Fort Loudoun Lake, the state Route 67 bridge in Carter County over the Watauga River, the Netherland Inn Bridge in Sullivan County and the state Route 56 bridge in DeKalb County over the Caney Fork River.
