KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (AP) -- Ronald D. McMahan, former editor and owner of the defunct Knoxville Journal newspaper and one-time press secretary to former U.S. Sen. Howard Baker, has died after a long illness in Naples, Fla. He was 70.

Cynthia Moxley, a public relations executive in Knoxville who used to work for McMahan (MACK-muh-'HAN), says he had been battling cancer and died in a hospice on Tuesday.

A Knoxville native who retired to Florida in 1998, McMahan delivered The Knoxville Journal as a boy and became a reporter there in 1958 while attending the University of Tennessee. He later worked for newspapers in Chattanooga.

After serving as Baker's press secretary in the 1970s during the Senate Watergate hearings, McMahan fulfilled a lifelong dream becoming editor and co-owner of The Knoxville Journal in the 1980s.
