KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (AP) -- Police have arrested a man they say used his daughter as a human shield so that officers wouldn't shoot him with a stun gun.
Knoxville Police suspect 37-year-old Jad Mubarak of stealing four iPods, software and an MPS recorder from a Target store earlier this week as well as assaulting an employee who confronted him.
Police spokesman Darrell DeBusk says officers found Mubarak at a motel on Thursday but he grabbed his 13-year-old daughter and backed into a room when they tried to arrest him.
He barricaded himself inside with the girl and his 11 year-old son.
For two hours he refused pleas from relatives to surrender peacefully.
Police eventually broke in through a window, arresting Mubarak and turning the children over to the state Department of Children's Services.
Mubarak was charged with felony theft, assault and reckless endangerment.
