KNOXVILLE, Tenn (WVLT) -- A Knox County man charged with killing one of four women found dead in his home made his first trip to court Wednesday.

Ricky Clark, 48, was arraigned on the Second Degree Murder charge in connection with the January death of Penny Welch.

Welch died after being injected with morphine, according to Knox County investigators.

Clark is free on $30,000 bond, but the court agreed to appoint the public defender to represent him because he says he cannot afford a lawyer.
The victim's mother says Clark's freedom is tough for her family to see.

"I want to see him locked up and never can get out," Betty Pike said today after the hearing. "It's hard for us to just watch him wheel in and wheel out and penny's gone forever."

Clark is due back in court on May 8th, for a preliminary hearing.

Rob Pratt has more from today's hearing, coming up First at 4:00, and tonight at 5:30.

How do you know RC has no remorse? RC was questionned thoroughly after the second death and the detective told him that there wasn't anything else to it even though the family wanted to make something else out of it. Here, 4 yrs. later Beth Smith is still trying to turn a simple overdose into murder. I think that these family members and reporters should be more careful with their words. They will probably all be looking at slander charges later.

I can't say how sorry I feel that my family members are going through so much pain over Penny's death. That shows it could happen to anyone of us. I think we will never know what happen to her in her last minutes of death, but I know she is in heaven, in a better place, and at peach. Now this RC guy, I can't understand it had to take 4 women to die in his home and he's free and has no remorse on anyone. After the first, second death, investigators should had him questioned. How could he not be responsible for the deaths. If a teen throws a party at his own house and has alcholic beverages, the parents get arrested even though they didn't know. How could they just set him free? He had a witness that actually saw the crime, can't they lock him up for that? Why are they taking so long to lock him up. He did it!!!! RIP Penny (I love you) your cousin.

My heart goes out to the families of these four women. I just hope that Mr. Clark's defense is not just slurs against these women and their families. I know that in cases of rape that the victim's past can not be used against them.
