KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (AP) -- A grand jury in Rutledge indicted two people in the killing of a woman nine years ago.
Charges of first-degree murder and conspiracy to commit first-degree murder were returned Monday in Grainger County against Christopher Elvin Williams and Leanne Stansberry.
They are charged in the death of Melissa Ann Patrick, whose body was found March 20, 1999, at the bottom of an embankment near Blaine.
The 20-year-old Patrick had left her home in western Knox County the night before.
She was found 30 miles away and had been shot in the back of the head.
Lt. Jesse Jarnigan of the Grainger County Sheriff's Office worked on the case through the administrations of three sheriffs.
He said the circumstances leading to Patrick's killing were a complicated series of events.
