KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WVLT) -- The high price of gas may actually be good news if you’re looking for an SUV.

If you fall into this category.

Randy Ford with Jim Cogdill Dodge says people who fall into this category “still have to carry a lot of people. They're still going to carry their friends, their children and their children's friends."

Chances are, a small, though fuel efficient, car may not be big enough. Meaning, a pre-owned SUV might just be the deal for you. Because, as Charles West with West Chevrolet says, "It's definitely a buyers' market. Sellers' market is a bit more challenging."

Ben Traywick with Lance Cunningham Ford says, "The prices you can get on these pre-owned SUVs right now is considerably lower than say even six months ago."

…With some pushing half the original sticker price.

West says, "It varies quite a bit depending upon year, model, and miles, but you can get a one-year old SUV in many cases very close to 50 percent off the original MSRP."

One man's gas guzzler is another man’s treasure

Traywick says, "You know they're buying them for less, trading them for less, but in turn, it passes on the savings to the next owner of the vehicle."

Ford says, "You can get into the mid-teens to upper teens and get a one or two year old SUV and get a really good buy."

And you can get an even better deal on a diesel.

Traywick says, "When you look at maybe even a diesel dually here, it's a $60,000 truck (for $23,900). I mean it's half the price."

Although the price of diesel is $4.50 a gallon.

West says, "But if you do need a diesel because you have a farm or because you pull a trailer or something like that, now is a great time to buy a diesel truck."

In a market like never before…

Traywick says, "The market is outstanding with the pricing on these vehicles. It's like nothing we've ever seen before."

Now, it's worth noting that considering the size and how many people SUVs carry, you're looking at 18,19, and in some cases 20 miles per gallon.
