KINGSPORT, Tenn. (AP) -- A grand jury in northeast Tennessee indicted a Kingsport man, charging him with killing his estranged wife by shooting her a half-dozen times as she sat in a chair.
Sealed indictments handed down against Joseph Adkins last month are now public record.
Adkins is charged with first-degree murder, felony murder, aggravated burglary, and three counts of aggravated assault in the May 2007 shooting of Kathy Adkins.
Investigators said Joseph Adkins kicked in the door of his estranged wife's home and shot her. As he walked back to his truck, he fired his gun toward children who were playing nearby.
Adkins said he used alcohol, cocaine and OxyContin the day of his wife's murder and didn't remember what happened.
A mental health evaluator advised the court Adkins was competent and that voluntary use of intoxicants doesn't support an insanity defense.
