KNOXVILLE (WVLT) – Knoxville Police believe a man who jumped off the South Knoxville Bridge mid-Sunday afternoon was trying to commit suicide.

According to at least one witness, the man who was identified as Brandon G. Burchfield, 24 of Knoxville, parked his car in the middle of the span and leaped into the Tennessee River. KPD, Knoxville Fire and volunteer rescue squad crews were dispatched to the scene around 2:15 PM.

A helicopter from the sheriff’s office was later called in to assist the search, which focused on the waters south of the bridge.

Divers from the Knoxville Volunteer Rescue Squad recovered Burchfield’s body just under the bridge at 5:53 PM.

Officers were still investigating late Sunday night.
