PIGEON FORGE, Tenn. (WVLT) -- It's was a busy Fourth of July in Sevier County this year with the annual River Raft Regatta and the Pigeon Forge concerts.
Pigeon Forge was looking forward to a big crowd of young people Friday night with a popular lineup, but the day began in Gatlinburg with a noon race where if it floats it counts, and it doesn’t matter what it looks like as long as it's first and wins.
After more than thirty years, the River Raft Regatta in downtown Gatlinburg continues.
More than 200 people entered the race with the categories Trash and Treasure, and it's usually trash that makes it down first.
This year's winner was a pill bottle followed by dental floss container in second.
The first and second place winners are actually related, and they compete against each other every year.
This year was Dean Jones' year.
"I did sort of like Jeff Gordon did Dale Earnhardt. I followed him for a few years then decided to go around him this year."
But thanks to a boat-building Grandma, 4-year-old Camden Autry took home first place in the treasure category.
And Camden fully expected to win.
A loss of weight along the way may have aided in the win.
Camden had Spiderman as a ride-along on the craft…
Camden’s mom Laurielle Autry explains, “Spiderman...which we lost somewhere in the creek but that's ok."
At Patriot Park in Pigeon Forge, it's concert time, and this is the second year they've tailored it to a younger audience.
Lila Wilson with the Pigeon Forge Tourism Department says, "Last year we grew in droves. We had about 60 thousand people and expect that many more people tonight."
With members of Metro Station singing and talking to fans, the over-forty crowd may not know whose playing but these kids have their favorite.
Concert-goer Hannah says there’s one band she definitely came to see.
“Good Charlotte…Because they are the best”
Besides Good Charlotte and Metro Station, Boys Like Girls was also in the lineup.
Both Gatlinburg and Pigeon Forge will end the evening with fireworks.
In Pigeon Forge the fireworks begin, rain or shine, shortly after the last band finishes at 9:30 p.m.
In Gatlinburg, they're expected to light up the sky in downtown around 10:00 p.m.
Latest Comments
The 9:30 fireworks in Pigeon Forge didn't start until shortely before 10:30. I saw many people leave in disguist before the first firework. The thousands who stuck around saw a great show.
