KNOXVILLE (WVLT) – Knoxville City Councilman Steve Hall was injured in an Anderson County motorcycle accident early Friday afternoon and had to be taken to Erlanger Medical Center in Chattanooga.
Hall’s wife Janet confirmed it happened around 12:30 PM while the councilman and his son-in-law were traveling to a family cookout at his aunt’s home in Briceville. She said they were on Windrock Mountain just outside of Lake City when he hit a patch of gravel going around a curve and lost control of his motorcycle. He traveled off the roadway, over an embankment and landed on some rocks which knocked him unconscious for about a minute. He was wearing a helmet.
Emergency crews transported him to Methodist Medical Center of Oak Ridge where doctors determined he would have to be taken to a larger facility. According to Janet, University of Tennessee Medical Center’s trauma unit was full, and bad weather across the region prevented LifeStar from flying, so he had to be taken by ambulance from Oak Ridge to Erlanger Medical.
Janet said according to doctors, her husbands back was broken in four places, he cracked eight ribs and a broken right shoulder. As of mid-Saturday morning he had not undergone surgery and the family was awaiting the arrival of a neurosurgeon.
Erlanger Medical lists Hall in fair condition and he can move his hands and toes. Janet said he has been fully immobilized in order to prevent possible paralysis.
Hall represents Knoxville’s Third District which includes neighborhoods in the north and western part of the city. Besides serving on the city council he is the head of the beer board and president of Interior Finishes Corporation. Hall is also a member and deacon at Gospel Light Baptist Church and the host of a weekly call-in cable access show.
He and Janet have five children and three grand children.
