JEFFERSON COUNTY (WVLT) -- Flood waters from a strong and unexpected downpour swept into dozens of Jefferson County homes early Sunday morning.

According to the county's emergency management agency, half a dozen people had to be rescued from the rushing water. When all was said and done, Jefferson County EMA had received more than two dozen calls of water damaged homes.

The rain fell only about four hours around Strawberry Plains and New Market, but it was enough to down trees, close roads and badly damage property.

Even though the area flooded about 10 years ago, many residents said it was the worst they had seen.

"We've never had this," said Laura Hebert whose basement flooded. "I've had water in my side yard before and it's come up in my driveway, but never like this."

The storm began around 4:00 AM, and managed to dump at least two and a half inches of rain along the Old Dandridge Highway and Blue Springs Road area. Some areas in Strawberry Plains got close to three inches of rain which turned lawns into lakes and homes into indoor swimming pools.

New Market Volunteer Fire Department officials said the storm also collapsed the foundation of a home on Pinecrest Lane. The owner was asleep at the time, but was uninjured.

"It just came down so fast and it didn't have any where to go," said Sammy Solomon from New Market VFD. "The ground was so hard that it just started flooding."

Rescue crews had their own emergency during the storm when a member of New Market VFD tried to rescue a dog but instead got dragged by the water currant into a ditch. Solomon and others were able to pull him back to safety.

Jefferson County EMA said that no one had reported any injuries related to the storm, and all roads in the area were reopened by Sunday afternoon.

If your home was damaged, you can get in touch with the EMA by called them at (865) 397-7228.

Im a fireman for NMVFD and wanted to note that Mr. Solomon was alone in his acts of rescueing firefighter Rogers. His quick actions said a fellow firemans life. Im glad to be working along side with him in this line of duty. Thanks to all who helped us during the flood rescues. Sincerely Firefighter Taylor Farrar "630"
