KNOXVILLE (WVLT) – Catalytic converter thefts are up ten times this year compared to three years ago. According to police, criminals are targeting the emissions controlling devices because they contain small amounts of precious metals. To help fight the growing trend, they joined forced with Toyota of Knoxville on Saturday to etch Vehicle Identification Numbers into customer’s catalytic converters.

"We are hoping that it is going to be a criminal deterrent,” said James Burrell with the Knoxville Police Department’s Metal Theft Unit. “They know this previously unidentifiable item is now identifiable and it gives investigators and the police a way to track them if they are found.”

“There are not a lot of dealers doing this yet, but there will be just over the next few weeks,” said Doug White, general manager of Toyota of Knoxville. “The task force is doing a phenomenal job and the police have done a great job communicating to us how important this is."

Police have said a skilled criminal can steal the catalytic converter off your vehicle in about 90 seconds. Etching takes about 40 minutes, but could save you from having to pay $3,000 for the stolen part.

KPD plans to hold another VIN etching on August 23rd. You can find out more information and register for the free etching by calling the department at (865) 215-7324
