MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) -- Gerald Janowski told a Shelby County jury he and his wife had both thought their 5-month-old son was asleep in his bedroom after a family outing.
Janowski defended himself Wednesday against a criminally negligent homicide charge in the heat death of Caleb Janowski in the family van in September 2005.
Janowski told the court of the hectic day when he and his wife Jill Janowski took Caleb and their other three children to their soccer games and shopping.
Janowski testified both parents thought the other had removed the infant from a third-row seat and brought him into their home in Cordova.
He said they realized their mistake about two hours later when his wife asked him where he had put the boy.
Both parents are charged. Jill Janowski did not testify.

This story is about my niece and her husband. I realize they made a horrible mistake; but their punishment is having to live with this for the rest of their lives.Putting them in jail certainly won't help their other three children or bring the baby back.I am in no way excusing what they did, but I think they need prayer and lots of it.
