WASHINGTON (AP) -- John McCain and Barack Obama have agreed to hold three presidential debates and one vice presidential debate this fall.

The campaigns issued a joint statement Thursday that outlined formats, dates and locations.

The Commission on Presidential Debates will sponsor the events.

An Oct. 7 debate will be a town hall-style meeting at Belmont University in Nashville, moderated by former NBC News anchor Tom Brokaw. He will call on audience members and read questions people have submitted through an Internet site.

Obama and McCain will stand at podiums for an opening debate Sept. 26 at the University of Mississippi.

The final presidential debate, on Oct. 15, will be at Hofstra University, where the candidates will sit at a table with moderator Bob Schieffer.
