KNOXVILLE (WVLT) – Hurricane Gustav caused scores of injuries when it crossed a western portion of Cuba late Saturday night.
By early Sunday morning it had move into the Gulf of Mexico, where forecasters believe the warm waters will only intensify the hurricane, possibly turning it into a category five storm. Category five storms are very dangerous and pack sustained winds of more than 155 miles per hour.
They are also extremely rare. Only three category five storms have made landfall in the United States. They were Hurricane Andrew in 1992, Hurricane Camille in 1969 and the Labor Day Hurricane of 1935, which is believed to have made landfall with sustained winds of nearly 200 miles per hour.
