CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. (AP) -- City and county officials in Chattanooga are spending a total of $6 million on a new welcome center that will serve partly as a Volkswagen showcase.
The $6 million is half the projected cost for the planned welcome center along Interstate 75 near the plant site. Volkswagen will pay the other $6 million.
The center was among the incentives that lured the plant to Chattanooga.
Chattanooga mayor's office spokesman Richard Beeland said the city's $3 million commitment will come from a bond measure not to exceed $40 million. Hamilton County has also committed $3 million.
Volkswagen spokeswoman Jill Bratina said the welcome center will "showcase the shared values of Volkswagen Group and Chattanooga," particularly environmental responsibility.
The planned $1 billion plant is expected to create 2,000 jobs.
