Knoxville (WVLT) - Perhaps you've gotten an e-mail warning you about a man that allegedly disabled a woman's car on Kingston Pike. Knoxville Police have received the same e-mail and they've charged a local man with a history of doing the same thing.

Knoxville Police arrested James D. Giles, Jr., 48, on a vandalism charge, a third DUI offense, violation of implied consent law and driving on a revoked license. He was also cited for having no insurance, driving without a seat belt and violation of state registration law for an improper tag.

KPD detectives say police say they believe he's the subject of the e-mail.

The incidents described in the e-mail happened on Monday. Knoxville Police received two calls about the man on Monday, though one man refused to file a report.

Both drivers told police a man in a Dodge Caravan pulled them over and said they were possibly having mechanical problems.

About that time, a KPD officer conducted a traffic stop on a possible suspect along Kingston Pike near Lockett Road.

The suspect, identified as Giles by KPD, was driving a 1987 Dodge Caravan that matched the description of the potential suspect reported by the callers.

Investigators say no new incidents have occurred since Giles was taken into custody.

Giles has a long criminal history, including a felony vandalism conviction, after police say he flagged a woman down by saying her car was having mechanical problems.

Giles served eleven months, 29 days after pleading guilty to that charge, then violating his parole.

Text of e-mail received by Volunteer TV News:
"Would you please send this out so women here will be aware of a potential danger near? Thank you.

When I left work yesterday afternoon I had a guy in a van next to me on Kingston Pike pointing down at my truck as if I might have a tire problem.

I didn't respond the first time so he pulled up and pointed again. I pulled over into a church parking lot to see if I had a tire going flat and when I looked up he had pulled up next to me. He said I didn't have a tire problem but there was smoke coming out from under my truck and he was a mechanic and asked if I wanted him to look at it.

Having just had a radiator repair within the last week I said yes. I won't go into the whole long story except to say that he said I had a problem with gas leaking due to air in my fuel injectors so he fiddled with wires and said I needed to drive a couple of blocks and come back and he needed to do that a couple of times.

When I drove off I realized my truck that had been running fine was missing badly so I called my mechanic and he said no such thing-bring it in.

I barely made it to the mechanic and discovered the guy had pulled all but two plugs out and the truck almost caught fire!!!

I'm sure his intent was to totally disable the truck and offer me a ride. I called the police as soon as I got home (leaving the truck with my mechanic for repair).

They had already had two calls that same day and were looking for this guy and had been apparently for a few days. He had attempted same thing near East Towne Mall and by our Kroger near here on Kingston Pike just yesterday.

The officer said she couldn't tell me everything except that he was a "person of interest" they wanted to talk to and have a BOLO out on him.

He's about 5'8", 200 lbs, short white hair, blue eyes, and drives a very light grey/blue van and is probably in early 50's. He looks very average. I just wanted to give everyone a heads up as hearing you have smoke coming out from under your vehicle sounds very plausible.

this same guy tried to pull me over on broadway. he used the same smoking car line on me but i was driving with my windows down and smelled/saw nothing. i had just had my car serviced so i figured if it really was smoking i would at least make it home rather than stopping with a very suspicious looking stranger who was a little too enthusiastic about how trustworthy he was. i'm so glad that i made that decision and that he didn't actually get to hurt anyone!! i think i learned the valuable lesson that these things aren't just stories on the news!

This is the same guy that tried to pull me over Monday, I was I40 going toward I640, He said my car was smoking, I was on my spare tire. I couldnt see any smoke. He followed me up the ramp to east towne exit. I told him I lived close and didnt need to pull over, he tried to convey how honest and I could trust him. Luckily when I got up to the next red light toward target a lady had her window down and she told me she could not see any smoke or steam. I did not go straight home. People never pull over for someone. And If you do have problems stay in the open, He was trying to get me to go in to the mall parking lot, Which is not as busy as you would like, When there was a McDonalds or several other busy places he could of asked me to go.
