KNOXVILLE, Tenn (WVLT) -- Once a year it's not the students that are graded, but the schools, and Monday the schools got their report card from the state.
It breaks down everything from their No Child Left Behind status to their graduation and attendance rates.
The good news is overall the state did well on certain benchmarks including No Child Left Behind.
Actually, 80 percent of the schools are in good standing, with the attendance rate above the goal in k through 8th, but the graduation rate is more than 7 percent below the state goal.
But schools, including one in Knox County, are working to getting better grades on their report card.
A small class and personalized lessons are what you'll find at Austin East Magnet High School.
But Curriculum Principal Katherine Banner says that's because of their latest No Child Left Behind status.
The school of more than 700 students received a "Restructuring 2" on their report card. "Which means we've been on the list for several years and as such we've gone through a complete redesign." says Katherine.
Also their graduation rate is nearly 15% below the state goal, and their attendance rate is more than 4% below.
Katherine says "We just began this year with our restructure of the new Austin East and our primary focus has been on improved instructional delivery."
While Knox County Schools Superintendent Dr. Jim McIntyre is pleased with the overall good standing of Knox County, he says their report card shows them where they need to focus.
Dr. McIntyre says "The focus on the relationships, the focus on the rigor of our curriculum and making sure every student has the opportunity to meet that rigorous academic standards."
But when there are empty seats in the classroom, those academic standards are lost on some.
Katherine says "Our biggest problem right now is attendance, no matter what you do, if you can't get them here, you're not going to have success with the Adequate Yearly Progress, AYP."
Although, some empty seats are because students no longer go to Austin East. With their progress status, parents are given the option to send their child to another school.
Katherine says "40% of our faculty is new, we're working on professional development in terms of improving our instructional delivery."
Just a couple of other examples here in East Tennessee: Oak Ridge and Maryville School systems both met their yearly progress standards, but Oak Ridge Schools are more than 8 percent below the goal graduation rate.
