Goody's halts giftcard sales, tuxedo rentals, layaway
Knoxville-based Goody's Family Clothing is apparently no longer issuing giftcards, accepting new tuxedo rental orders, or offering layaway services -- at least for the immediate future, according to a memo sent to Goody's stores and obtained by VolunteerTV.com. Calls placed to several Goody's stores in Tennessee and other states also confirm the changes.

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WVLT) -- Knoxville-based Goody's Family Clothing is apparently no longer issuing giftcards, accepting new tuxedo rental orders, or offering layaway services -- at least for the immediate future, according to a memo sent to Goody's stores and obtained by VolunteerTV.com. Calls placed to several Goody's stores in Tennessee and other states also confirm the changes.

It's not clear if the halt on giftcards, tuxedos and layaways is a permanent or temporary move, or why stores have been asked to stop those sales.
Stores will continue to issue giftcards to customers returning merchandise without a sales receipt.
"Management must stress that all previously issued giftcards are to be redeemed as usual and all current layaway, tuxedos and organizational accounts will continue unchanged," the message to Goody's stores states.
The directive issued to stores instructs employees to remove all store signage pertaining to giftcards, layaways and tuxedos from the sales floor until further notice.
Calls to a Goody's on New Year's Day were not immediately returned. Goody's corporate headquarters was apparently closed. However, in an email sent late Friday morning, Goody's spokesperson Joanna Gager said, "Goody's corporate office has no comment for the press at this time. "
Goody's filed for reorganization under Chapter 11 bankruptcy laws on June 9, 2008. After reorganization, the company emerged from bankruptcy in October.
Published reports (Women's Wear Daily and KnoxNews.com) in early December suggested that Goody's Family Clothing may once again be headed for bankruptcy. The reports suggested the company may not reorganize if it files for bankruptcy a second time. Goody's has not commented on the rumor of a possible second bankruptcy filing.
