Knoxville (AP) -- Enrollment has inched up about two percent this fall at Tennessee's public colleges and universities.

That's according to preliminary figures released today by the Tennessee higher education commission.

Experts credit the Tennessee Lottery's scholarship program, particularly for gains among four-year universities.

Enrollment was virtually flat at two of the largest campuses, the University of Tennessee in Knoxville and the University of Memphis. But the state's seven other public universities all had gains. Among them, UT-Martin is up 6% and East Tennessee State and Tennessee Tech are both up more than four percent.

Enrollment at the state's 13 two-year colleges varied widely from a 12% increase at Motlow State to a nearly 5% decline at Columbia State.
