WHITLEY COUNTY, Ky. (WVLT) – A 1.1 magnitude earthquake occurred Sunday afternoon along the Tennessee Kentucky border.
The U.S. Geological Survey says it happened at 1:03 PM about 10 miles east of Jellico in a wooded area near Buffalo Creek and Lambdin Hill. Geologists pinpoint the epicenter in a small fault about 16 miles underground.
The fault is on the outer edge of the Eastern Tennessee Seismic Zone, which crosses several southern Appalachia states.
A larger earthquake measuring 2.3 in magnitude occurred Friday about 30 miles north of the Buffalo Creek quake.
