Knoxville (WVLT) - A Former Campbell County law enforcement officer is accused for the second time of stealing narcotics from a drug store, this time, authorities say he demanded the drugs at knifepoint.

Volunteer TV's Gary Loe is in the newsroom with details of Tuesday's armed robbery at a Jacksboro pharmacy.

Workers at Terry's Pharmacy say they recognized former deputy Scott Smith as he entered the drug store, about 10 o'clock Tuesday morning.

Campbell County Sheriff Gary Perkins says Scott Smith was a deputy with the department for more than 15 years.

Drug store employees say Smith went behind the counter and demanded methadone, while holding a knife to a pharmacist's throat.

Police say Smith fled after grabbing a bottle of the drug.

He was later taken into custody after ingesting some pills, and is being treated at an area hospital.

"Everybody here's shaken-up. It's the first time anything like this has happened, but it's one of those risks everyday when you deal with this business, unfortunately," says Rissa Tamer, president of Terry's Pharmacy.

Scott Smith's tenure ended about 4 years ago, when Smith resigned amid allegations that while working a second police job with the city of Jacksboro, he stole narcotics while investigating a drug store robbery.

Smith lost his police certification as a result of those charges and has not worked as an officer since that time.

Smith has not yet been arrested, but police say he'll likely be charged with aggravated robbery.
