Southwest Knox County to get new school, leaving some feeling slighted
In three to four years, Southwest Knox County is going to have a brand new elementary school. East Side residents are happy for their western neighbors. But...They would just like their own piece of the educational pie

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WVLT) -- "There's a lot of growth on the west side. It's kind of like they shut the east side out a whole lot."

Brittany George will be putting her five year old son Kiias into elementary school this fall. She's opting for a magnet school. Not happy with the options she has.

"The buses won't come to the East Side to take you all the way out west, so there's a lot of overcrowded schools, elementary schools and middle schools over here on the east side," George told WVLT.

Last night, the School Board voted to build a brand new 25-million dollar elementary school in Southwest Knox County, leaving one parent wishing for the same in her community.

"I don't remember ever actually if they have built a new school or how long ago it's been and ai don't remember any new schools over here or any new things over on the east side," said George.

"We look at where the need is. We look at what the resources are and where the need is and we try and do that objectively."

School Superintendent Jim McIntyre, who recommended the new school, says the location was not to slight East Side residents.

"Sometimes that's in the West. Sometimes that's in the East. Sometimes that's in the North or Central part of the County. It depends on what data and analysts show us."

Small consolation for some East Side taxpayers.

"The population is greater of course in the West, but still that's not any reason to leave the East out," Pat Hayes, said.

Sam Hayes said "It does seem like the East does get left out. More population in the West, but we feel like the East should be represented too.

"I'd be excited. I want to see a new school over here because I don't think they have built a new school over here for a while," George said.

I just drove to Carter elementary yesterday-they have bull dozed most of the back playground to put in another portable, and guess what?It is used!!The portable is sitting there in the parking lot,it is old, dirty, and appears to have dents and scratches on the outside. The parking lot has also been damaged.I hope they fix all of this before my daughter goes back in August.I do not want her having class in that portable.Come on Knox county-Carter kids count too!!

East Knoxville is just like Strawberry Plains in Jefferson County. We never get anything on this end of the county and we never have.

Once again they just whitewash it.Carter has been ignored for years now.We are still paying a wheel tax for West Knoxville's new high school, but we have to send our kids to a school that is very old and crowded. They just keep adding portable buildings.
