FORT LOUDOUN LAKE, Tenn. (WVLT) -- With all the events going on this weekend, especially on the water, law enforcement will be out in force keeping our waterways safe.

Boating under the influence is certainly one thing officers will be looking for in light of 97 arrests this year for BUI.

Knowing the rules certainly helps keep you from not only getting a ticket but it keeps you safe as well.

Lots of people will be enjoying themselves on the waterways this weekend and the TWRA will also be out and you never know when an officer may want to visit you.

TWRA Officer Dewayne Williams stopped a boat and said, "Just do a quick safety check. I see you have yours on mam. Do you have one more life jacket on board?"

Besides a life jacket for everyone, Officers will be looking to make sure those 12 and under are wearing their life jacket, and when it comes to the new inflatable life jackets.

"They're not considered a life jacket. They are only a life jacket if they are on the person," says Officer Williams.

Officers will also be checking for registration and a throw cushion. If you don't have everything you need you face getting a ticket, but if everything checks out.

"Yall are good to go. Yall have a safe weekend," Williams told one boater.

Officer Williams says, "About 95% of the time everybody will have what they are supposed to have."

Officer Williams warns they'll also be enforcing the moving laws as well.

For those on personal water craft, jumping the wakes of boats can get you a ticket like this guy.

And when it comes to drinking and boating, Williams says don't do it.

"Make sure you have a designated driver," says Officer Williams.

A conviction can cost you a hefty fine and loss of boating privileges.

Officer Williams says they're especially concerned also about kids wearing life vests.

You can get a ticket if your child doesn't have one but if they do, your child may just get something special.

Williams says, "There's coloring books in here. There's also a coupon for a free ice cream at McDonald's."

And something often overlooked is a fire extinguisher.

Officer Williams says not only make sure you have one but make sure it's in working order.

Although Officer Williams handed out two tickets, he also gave out six goodie bags with the free ice cream.
