20-years later, still no arrests in murder of KPD motorcycle patrolman
20-years ago today, Knoxville Police Motorcycle Patrolman Tony Williams was gunned down. To this day the case remains cold. KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WVLT) -- "I can remember 20 years ago exactly my feelings and today. I think Tony would still be in law enforcement."
Perhaps no one knew Tony Williams better than his college teammate and roommate Johnny Hibbett. Both were offensive linemen for the Vols back in the mid-80's. That's Tony wearing number 60. Hibbett says Williams was a very solid player.
"Tony was a joy to play with. He was an excellent athlete. He came out of Sullivan Central in Kingsport, was an offensive tackle. Tony was strong, he was quick and he really did a tremendous job on the offensive line."
But even while Williams was protecting quarterbacks, he was talking about protecting citizens.
" As corny as it may sound Tony would always say that I want to fight crime someday. I want to help people."
And helping people is what Williams was doing on July 7th, 1989. While on patrol, Williams was gunned down. Shot in the back while riding his motorcycle.
Tony williams Body was found here at the cherry street on-ramp to I-40. While police believe the killer is serving life in prison on unrelated charges, it's still technically an open investigation, but 20-years after Williams was murdered, still no arrest.
"We always want to bring closure to the family and that's something that we strive to do everyday," said Darrell DeBusk of the Knoxville Police Department.
But after 20-years, you have to wonder if family and friends will ever know who killed Tony Williams.
"We're going to continue to work this case," DeBusk said. "You know, we're confident there's somebody out there that knows exactly what happened and who was involved in this case. We hope that even after 20-years that they would want to feel obligated to come forward."
"Miss him a lot. I miss his friendship, his camaraderie he was a great teammate and a great roommate, but you know I know where Tony is today and even if he'd been here today I still think he would have enjoyed doing the work of a police officer," said Hibbett.
