SEVIERVILLE, Tenn. (WVLT) -- One person had to be pulled to safety after an hour-long swift water rescue operation in the Shagbark community of Sevier County near Waldens Creek Road, according Sevierville spokesman Bob Stahlke and John Fox with the Sevier County Emergency Management Agency.

Stahlke says an 18-year-old man was pulled from the water about an hour after the car he was traveling in with four other people overturned on North Clear Fork Road at an area where water from a nearby creek had overtaken the roadway. It's not clear exactly what caused the crash or whether another vehicle was involved.

Stahlke says at some point during the rescue operation, gasoline from the car ignited on the vehicle and the car drifted toward the tree the stranded man was clinging to. The fire burned out before it reached the man.

He was pulled to safety and taken to an area hospital to be checked out for possible hypothermia, Stahlke says.

The victim's name has not been released, and there were apparently no other injuries.
