KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WVLT) -- Rescue crews are searching for a woman missing in the Little River around the Metcalf Bottoms Picnic Area near Townsend.
Great Smoky Mountains National Park spokesman Bob Miller says a ranger approached the woman standing on a rock around 3:30 Friday. He offered assistance and got no response. Just moments later, the woman went into the water.
Miller says about five minutes later, another ranger saw the woman and threw her a float. That ranger claims she picked it up and threw it away from her. Miller says the woman has not been seen since 3:45 Friday.
"Rangers are moving along the river banks downstream from the point were the subject entered the water while others are searching upstream from The Sinks," Miller says. A team is also set up stationary just upstream from The Sinks to intercept the victim if she is swept past. The Sinks is about 1.5 to 2 miles below Metcalf Bottoms."
Miller says the Little River is current at flood stage with very swift currents and murky water.
Search crews plan to return at first light on Saturday morning. Miller says their hope is that the river will have gone down enough by then to reveal the woman if she is still in the water. They hope that she got out on the other side and is safe.
The Little River Road is closed between Townsend and Metcalf Bottoms Picnic Area.
There is no word yet of the woman's identity.
