KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WVLT) -- Officials with the U.S. Geological Survey confirms a pair of earthquakes shook East Tennessee the first week of August.
The first was a 2.1 magnitude quake that hit at 10:25 p.m. last Thursday about three miles southwest of Vonore. The epicenter was located just off the roadway in the 100 block of Tallent Lane. Seismologists placed the exact location of the quake within a small fault, approximately 4.4 miles beneath the epicenter in the earth’s crust.
A second earthquake struck Friday at 7:38 p.m. Its magnitude was recorded at 1.8 and seismologists pinpointed it’s location in Greenback, about nine and a half miles away from the first quake.
The USGS said its epicenter was located under Franklin Estates Lane. The quake originated in an underground fault about five miles beneath the epicenter.
Most of East Tennessee sits within the Eastern Tennessee Seismic Zone. It’s considered one of the most earthquake-prone areas in the southeast. The two quakes brought East Tennessee’s total for the month up to three.
