KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WVLT) – A long time West Knoxville institution has officially closed its doors.
Cats Music and DVDs on Kingston Pike is a family owned chain that had seven stores spread out between Tennessee, Virginia and South Carolina.
The official announce came in the form of a handwritten note left on the front door. The note thanked customers for visiting for more than 35 years. It also blamed the store’s closing on several factors including the economy, rampant illegal downloads and competition from big-box stores.
The Cats Music in Chattanooga closed back in the spring.

I think it was horrible the way Cat's Music Store closed without giving its loyal customers any notice. I was in the store less than a week before the store closed and one of the employees joked around with me and gave no indication that anything was amiss. Cat's was like part of the neighborhood. I liked hanging out there for the personal service, the music, the atmosphere (something you can not get at Wal-Mart's).I also feel like I was left hanging. Cat's had a long-time policy of giving you a free CD after you'd purchased 12. I found out they'd closed when I went to get my free CD.

What does an indie record store have to do with the quality of modern CDs and how many good songs are on them? I'm pretty certain that the blame for that should go to record labels & A&R people. As far as Wal-Mart being cheaper, everything is cheaper at Wal-Mart, no matter what the product is, but that affordability comes at a far greater cost... I hope that one day you learn the value of purchasing locally owned products vs. spending money that goes everywhere else, especially overseas. The next time you go to Wal-Mart, start looking at where the products you buy are made. You save money by not supporting local business... Your money goes out of town and out of state... Congratulations! I also challenge you to start listening to better quality music that has more than 2 or 3 good songs per album. What are you listening to, anyway? Taylor Swift?

Cat's prices were almost DOUBLE the price on most items, that's why you're out of business buddy. I'm like the first poster, you get maybe 3 decent songs on a cd, so why go to CATS's and buy it for $25 when you can go to WALMRT'S music site and download those 3 songs at 88cents a piece?? Duuuhhh
