TAHLEQUAH, Okla. (WVLT/AP) – A fatal helicopter crash in Oklahoma has an eerie connection to East Tennessee.

The Federal Aviation Administration said the crash occurred sometime after a 2007 Robinson R22 Beta took off from the Tahlequah City Airport early Thursday morning. Oklahoma State Troopers found the wreckage next morning with the pilot and passenger both dead.

The chopper apparently had no prior mechanical problems, but the Tulsa World reports that according to FAA records, it’s owned by Trevor B. Nobel. Nobel was killed in a helicopter crash on November 5, 2007 in Fentress County.

Nobel owned Fly-N-Dollar, a Nashville-based charter helicopter service. The flight had been chartered by Young Oil Corporation, though the two other men who were killed on board did not work for the company.

At the time, Fentress County authorities said windy conditions forced the helicopter to land twice. When it lifted off for the second time, it apparently got caught in some power lines and burst into flames. The wreckage was found deep in the woods along New Hope Church Road near the Little Crab community.

It’s unclear how the helicopter involved in the Oklahoma crash passed from Nobel to Mark Mahaney, 26 who was at the controls when it went down. FAA officials did tell the newspaper that it did have other co-owners, but Mahaney and his passenger, Darci Scraper, 20 were not among them.

The crash is still under investigation.
