ANDERSON COUNTY, Tenn. (WVLT) – The Y-12 National Security Complex in Oak Ridge has released a photo of construction crews lifting the tank to the top of its second brand new water tower.
On October 19, crews began the all day process of lifting a 215-ton tank for its east water tower. The process required at least 48 cables to hoist the tank. Work on the tower’s mechanical and electrical system hasn’t been complete.
The west and east towers are part of Y-12’s project to install a new potable water system. Construction on the east tower is further along and crews are currently working on its pump room. It will serve as the primary water tower for the complex while the West tower will serve as backup.
Complex officials said the east tank will need to be repainted because of rust streaks from moisture seal joints. The roof and floor of the west tower are still under construction. Once it’s complete, crews will also paint it inside and out.
Testing on both water towers is scheduled to in December. The tanks are expected to be filled in February 2010.
